Dear Families,
We have reached the end of the first half of the Autumn Term and what a half term it’s been.
It seems such a short time ago that everyone started the new school year and how quickly the children have settled into their new classes. Already, they are well established, working hard and achieving so much. I look forward to seeing all children return on Tuesday 31st October.
Today at our Celebration Assemblies, it was lovely to see so many children recognised for their efforts in and out of school. Celebrating our own and others achievments is one of our values which enables us to welcome, celebrate and care for each other making our school a safe and happy place.
These are some of our awards:
-
- Stars of the Week: Awards recognising effort and actions in line with our 5 values saw children being rewarded for being outstanding role models and making sustained progress in their learning.
- Kindness Awards: Received by children who were identified for treating others with respect and love and their acts of kindess were celebrated.
- Golden Tea Headteacher Awards: One child in each year group is selected for outstanding contributions and is given an invite to attend a special afternoon tea with the headteacher.
- Sports Award: Granted to one person in Year 1 or 2 and one person in years 3,4,5 or 6 for stand out effort and sportmanship in PE lessons.
- Speller of the Week: Given to the person in each class who has demonstrated a concientious effort to improve and learn their spellings.
- Reading Plus Awards: Presented to children in years 4,5 & 6 who have achieved a new level on the online reading platform.
- Times Table Rockstars: Given to children in years 3, 4,5 & 6 who have achieved a new level on the online maths platform.
- Lexia Award: Bestowed to children who have achieved a new level on the online platform.
- Golden Cup Award: Presented to a class in each key stage recogniseing their collective efforts and demonstrating our school values.
Finally, as events continue to unfold in the Middle East our thoughts are with those in our school community who have themselves been personally affected, with family or friends caught up in the conflict. Remember, we are here to support in any way we can at this incredibly worrying time.
As always please do speak to myself or our staff with ideas, questions and thoughts.
– All the Best, Miss Toni Mason
Black History Month 2023
Our theme has been – ‘Many Voices; Many Choices’
October is Black History Month. At St John the Baptist we teach Black History through the curriculum all year long, and have a particular in depth focus in October.
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, this week we had a fabulous showcase which involved performances and skills demonstrations from children (and their families) across the school. They worked so hard to prepare something to showcase, and it was lovely to see so many families in the audience enjoying themselves.
Some groups have visited the Hackney Museum this week for workshops, and our local library visits have also involved some extra special celebrations and craft activities.
To mark the final day of Black History Month, on the children’s first day back after Half Term there will be a celebratory lunch including some traditional dishes for them to enjoy.
Holidays during term time
At St John the Baptist, we believe that for children to achieve their full potential they need to attend regularly and punctually. Children should be at school, on time, every day the school is open, unless the reason for the absence is unavoidable.
Please note that we do not authorise holidays in term time under any circumstances. Parents & carers need to ensure that they do not book holidays or flights before term ends or after term has begun. In recent years we have seen the number of requests for time out of school to visit seriously sick elderly relatives rise massively in the last weeks of July and the first weeks of September. It is impossible for us to distinguish between a true family crisis and those seeking cheaper flights.
If you book holidays during term time you risk being fined.
Upcoming Dates
We have sent out Autumn 2 upcoming dates – please check out all of the fabulous events in Autumn Term part 2.

Children’s Progress Evening
(Parents/Carers’ Evening)
We are pleased to announce that our first Children’s Progress Evenings this year are on Tuesday and Wednesday 5th and 6th December 2023 from 3.40 – 6pm. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, hear and see what your child has been learning in class and discuss your child’s next steps.
School Uniform
Jewellery – children should not wear any jewellery to school. If your child has pierced ears, small studs may be worn.
PE Uniform – There have been increasingly more children wearing bright coloured jogging bottoms and tops on PE days. Please note that the unioform is Navy shorts or jogging bottoms and PE tshirt. If it is cold school jumpers can be worn on top.

St John the Baptist Nearly New Uniform Shop
We now operate an a nearly new uniform shop. Please visit the school office and have a look at the many items we have available.
Can you please help us?
To make this a success, we will be dependent on the generosity of parents and carers donating their children’s uniforms when they have finished with them. All funds raised go straight to our various fundraising projects and therefore benefit all the children in the school. Donations of uniform and PE kit can be left at Reception, in school hours, all year round.
Thank you for supporting the school.
