Welcome to our new E-Newsletter!
Dear Families,
After a busy few of weeks, I am delighted to say a warm welcome hello to all of our families and to those that are joining us for the first time – we are so happy to have been meeting you all at our many ‘Meet the Teacher’ events.
Over the course of the year there will be many events taking place across the school that we cannot wait to welcome you to.
Thanks to parents for the feedback on creating this new e-version newsletter, on developing the playground, on offering to volunteer and asking many questions to ensure we are working together to ensure your child achieves well while they attend St John the Baptist and beyond. I personally enjoyed the many positive comments families shared about our hardworking staff and the great questions that were asked about the content of the curriculum.
Sharing with families that our Key stage 1 and 2 (year 2 and year 6) results last year were above both National and Hackney averages bought many smiles as did our great conversations around how our vision ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ was helping us focus on how we treat each other with respect and kindness and many children were being recognised with Kindness Awards.
A highlight this week was when I was able to make a surprise visit to see our Year 4 children at Ufton Court. The children were eager to share stories of adventure and determination as they tried many new activities from climbing, ropes courses, archery, cooking, fire lighting and farm skills. The children have now safely returned and are ready to share their tales with excitement. See below for some great photos.
As always please do speak to myself or our staff with ideas, questions and thoughts.
– All the Best, Miss Toni Mason
Black History Month 2023
Our theme has been – ‘Many Voices; Many Choices’
This month, we have been celebrating, Black History Month. There have been and there are still to come a number of exciting events and activities for us.
-
- We have held special assemblies – and each day children have been learning about different prominent black figures and the positive impact that they have had.
- We are looking forward to our Many voices; Many choices showcase on Thursday 19th October at 9am for families. Pupils will be sharing their talents, whether it be singing, dancing, poetry or another special talent. We would love parents and carers to come and give their support and encouragement. The children will attending a second showcase so all children can watch at 10:00am.
- Art lessons have had a focus on prominent Black artists, and we will be displaying children’s work next week
- Throughout October, adults have been running running Black History Month Bookclubs during lunchtime, where pupils can come and read, and discuss stories about, by, and celebrating black voices.
- A number of trips, visitors and workshops have and will continue to take place. These will be different for each class, so please stay tuned for details!
See you on Thursday for the showcase!
Attendance
Good attendance at school is not just valuable, it’s essential. Going to school is directly linked to improved learning outcomes which should in turn lead to further opportunities and better job prospects. As well as this, going to school helps to develop:
- Friendships
- Social skills
- Team values
- Good mental health
- Life skills
- Cultural awareness
- Career pathways
The beginning and end of the day
Being punctual is as important as good attendance
Pupils need to arrive on time from 8:45am and unless they attend clubs, be collected promptly at 3:30 pm. Any children arriving after 8:55am, or picked up after 3:30pm will be given a late warning.
Year 6 pupils may make their own way home with parental consent and agreement from the leadership team. Nursery up to Year 5 must be collected by someone aged 16 or over.
Communication & Getting in touch
We send out regular letters and messages to parents via our Marvellous Me App and via email. Please do check your e-mail inboxes regularly. Any issues or if you need help please ask for support at the school office.
Based on parental feedback we are continuing to send out key dates for the half term to help with all families and their planning. Please watch out for this in the coming weeks.
Thanks also for the great feedback and ideas to move online for newsetters. We have launched our E version (this one). Please let us know if you have any ideas on items we can include.
St John the Baptist Nearly New Uniform Shop
We now operate an a nearly new uniform shop. Please visit the school office and have a look at the many items we have available.
Can you please help us?
To make this a success we will be dependent on the generosity of parents and carers donating their children’s uniforms when they have finished with them. All funds raised go straight to our various fundraising projects and therefore benefit all the children in the school. Donations of uniform and PE kit can be left at Reception, in school hours, all year round.
Thank you for supporting the school.

This is the half term that your child will be going swimming as part of their PE curriculum:
- Autumn 1 2023: Year 6
- Autumn 2 2023: Year 5
- Spring 1 2024: Year 4
- Spring 2 2024: Year 2
