Dear Families,
As per our previous letter to you all a few days ago, you will be aware that we welcomed Ofsted inspectors into our wonderful school community this week.
We had a fantastic two days showcasing all the wonderful teaching and learning that goes on here every single day. The report is currently being written and judgements finalised but should be published ready to share with you all in about thirty-days.
I would like to thank all of the families who took the time to complete the parent survey. We were able to show how we work in partnership with our families and know our community. Our children were able to demonstrate just how kind, beautifully well-mannered and all-round impressive they are. We are proud of them.
For those celebrating Diwali we wish you the best.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes, Toni Mason
Children in Need
Spot-tacular Day 17th November
It’s that time of year again! St John the Baptist is proud to support Children in Need and we will be raising money for this excellent cause.
All children are invited to wear spots to school on Friday the 17th November 2023 to help raise money for Children in Need.
We are asking each child to donate £1. Please put this in the buckets on each gate/entrance.
Children can come in wearing as many spots as possible.
We will have spotty stickers to purchase from the school office for 50p a sheet to help decorate your child’s clothing in a low-cost yet effective way. Please do not feel you need to purchase additional items. If you have ‘children in need’ clothes from previous years, please reuse them. In the past, many homemade spotty outfits have been used and they’re brilliant!
Please ensure children are appropriately dressed for the cold weather and have their coats with them. If your child has PE please ensure the spotty clothing is suitable for exercise and sports.
If you would like to find out more about Children in Need and the children they help, please visit their website www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk for more information.
Children’s Progress Evenings
(formerly called Parents Evening)
Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th December 2023 are Children’s Progress Meetings from 3.40 – 6pm. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, hear and see what your child has been learning in class and discuss your child’s next steps. You will need to book a time slot to meet your child’s teacher. Booking information will follow in the coming weeks.
Christmas Raffle 2023
We are kindly asking for donations of items for our popular Christmas Raffle.
Donations may include: Unused and unopened toiletries / sets; activities, gamnes and books for children and gifts / homewares.
Please bring your donations in as soon as possible to the main school office. Raffle tickets will go on sale soon.
Attendance is a Priority at St John the Baptist
Good attendance should begin as soon as children start school, whether this is in pre school or Nursery or in Reception classes. Missed learning time means knowledge and skills are missed.
Good habits and high expectations start here!
Absence from school
We record details of pupils’ attendance and absence at school. We do this at the beginning of morning and afternoon sessions meaning that each day your child receives two half day marks.
If your child is going to be absent from school, (e.g. for an unavoidable appointment) then you should let the school know as soon as possible. If your child has been absent due to an unexpected event such as bereavement or illness then you must also let the school know on the first day of absence in line with our attendance policy.
We will then record the absence. If you fail to tell the school as to why your child has not been present then the school may record that period of absence as being unauthorised.
Attendance in figures
We will advise parents of a child’s attendance levels at least once a year. This will usually include a percentage attendance figure.
Achieving 90 per cent in an exam or test is a fantastic result but if your child is at school for only 90 per cent of the school year then they will have missed 19 days – almost four whole weeks of school. For primary-age children, this can mean almost 120 guided learning hours. This is a big gap for any child to make up.
The expected level of attendance for Hackney school children is at least 95%. Our school target for attendance is 96.5%.
Because attendance is so important, we check attendance each month and will let you know by text message as soon as your child’s absence falls below 95%.
St John the Baptist Nearly New Uniform Shop
We now operate an a nearly new uniform shop. Please visit the school office and have a look at the many items we have available.
Can you please help us?
To make this a success we will be dependent on the generosity of parents and carers donating their children’s uniforms when they have finished with them. All funds raised go straight to our various fundraising projects and therefore benefit all the children in the school. Donations of uniform and PE kit can be left at Reception, in school hours, all year round.
Thank you for supporting the school.
