Dear Parents and Carers,
What a fantastic week it has been at SJB! We began by celebrating our new student leaders, with children from Years 3–5 proudly receiving their leadership badges. It has been wonderful to see them already beginning to take on their new responsibilities across the school.
There has been lots to celebrate in and beyond the classroom this week, including our Year 6 children representing St John the Baptist at the Church Schools Celebration Service and plenty of exciting learning taking place across the school. We have also begun our Black History Month celebrations, which will continue throughout October.
Next week is another busy one! Please look carefully at the key dates and messages in this newsletter, including information about our upcoming parent events and opportunities to come into school.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and for being such an important part of our SJB community.
Warm regards,
Ms Toni Mason

Meet Our New School Leaders
On Monday morning, we were delighted to officially introduce our newly elected School Leaders for 2026–27 in assembly. Each child was presented with their leadership badge, which they will now proudly wear around school as they carry out their new roles.
Children in Years 3–5 volunteered for leadership roles and were then elected by their classmates. They will represent their classes, work across different areas of school life and talk with our younger children to make sure their ideas and voices are heard too.
At St John the Baptist, we have several different pupil leadership teams:
• School Council – representing pupils’ views and helping to make decisions about school life.
• Eco Warriors – helping us look after our environment and make our school more sustainable.
• Digital Leaders – supporting safe, confident and responsible use of technology across school.
• Wellbeing Ambassadors – promoting kindness, friendship and positive wellbeing for everyone.
• Value Leaders – helping us celebrate and bring our school values to life every day.
Meanwhile, our Year 6 pupils are currently going through the application, interview and selection process to become our Prefects for 2026–27.
Watch this space – we’ll be announcing our new Prefect Team very soon!

Road Safety Reminder

As mentioned last week, we have followed up with the Council about employing a new School Crossing Patrol Officer for the zebra crossing on Pitfield Street. There are a number of reports of vehicles just not stopping.
Pitfield Street remains incredibly busy, and we are aware that some children regularly play nearby after school. Please remember that the road can remain dangerous even outside school hours, with reports of speeding bicycles and e-bikes causing collisions and injuries.
We ask all families, particularly those living locally, to be extra mindful of children being out unsupervised around Pitfield Street. We want to do everything we can to prevent further accidents and keep our children safe.
Parents’ Evening – Save the Date!
Our Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 14th October. You will soon receive an email containing a Google Doc where you can sign up for a 10-minute appointment with your child’s teacher. (See our dates poster for this half term with all the important dates!
If you have more than one child at the school, please take extra care to enter the correct child’s name on the correct class sheet – we had one or two misplaced children last year!
Parents’ Evening is a valuable opportunity to hear how your child is getting on, celebrate their progress and discuss any questions or areas where they may need additional support. We look forward to welcoming you and having these important conversations.
