Dear Families, Reading is an important part of our children succeeding. Learning new words and reading is vital for any future career. Children who choose to read are out performing their peers who are not regular readers. At St |John the Baptist we are fostering a love of reading: fiction, non fiction, poetry and graphic novels. There are many choices. On Thursday 7th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day in school. This is a day to focus on books and enjoying reading. Some children (and staff!) love to dress up as book characters. Alternatively, children (and staff!) can come to school in comfy clothes or pyjamas. Your child can also come in non-uniform if they prefer. This year we’d love to invite you (parents and carers) into school on the day. The classroom doors will open at 8:45am and we invite parents to stay for the first 15-30minutes. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Toni Mason You may have seen our new Upcoming dates come through this week via email and found here on our website – follow this link: https://st-john.hackney.sch.uk/news-and-events/calendar/ To celebrate our fantastic Outstanding Ofsted result, we would like to invite all parents and carers to join us for a special Afternoon Tea with their child’s class on Friday 15th March at 2:30pm. Come and enjoy an afternoon snack, some singing and the chance to celebrate all the wonderful achievements of our fantastic school community. To let us know if you are able to attend, please complete this short google form. The school journey is where most children and parents are on ‘auto-pilot’ whether in the car or on foot. We all need to remember – we must give the road our full attention at all times. The video links below remind parents of how they should travel safely – holding hands, not being distracted and not going ahead of parents. We must be fully aware of driveways and cars reversing and so it is essential children stay close to their parents whenever they are out walking, scooting or cycling. www.think.gov.uk/resource/first-journeys/ www.think.gov.uk/resource/expect-the-unexpected/ Measles cases are rising across England and in London. Hackney is at particularly high risk of outbreaks as it has the lowest rate of MMR vaccine uptake in the country. Measles is a serious illness; between 20% and 40% of affected cases can require hospital admission. In rare cases, tragically, measles can be fatal. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared a national standard incident following a large measles outbreak in the West Midlands. Parents should check their children are fully vaccinated with 2 MMR doses, by checking their red book or with their GP practice. Anyone not up-to-date with their vaccines should make an appointment with their GP as soon as possible. Anyone with symptoms is also being advised to stay at home and phone their GP or NHS 111 for advice. Read more here You can also use the NHS App to book and manage appointments online. Catch-up clinics are also being offered to children between 4-11 years as they may be overdue for their Polio and/or MMR immunisations. If you would like to book a free vaccine for your child please call: 0207 613 9044 or email mmr@vaccinationuk.co.uk. Upcoming catch up clinics will be held on Saturday 16th and 23rd March at Hackney Central Library from 10.30am – 2.30pm. As our OPAL journey continues, we are reaching out to our amazing community. Do you have any used (but clean) kitchen ware that’s past its best? Old saucepans or spatulas; frying pans or rolling pins. We are looking to include these items in our plans for a mud kitchen. If you are able to support our play in this way, please get in touch via the office email: office@st-john.hackney.sch.uk or simply drop off your donations at the school office. Please also don’t forget to complete our parent survey – the more information we have, the better our play times can be! Thank you in advance. Our school council is organising the celebrations and fundraising for the Red Nose Day 2024. This year it is on Friday the 15th March 2024. We are inviting children to wear red, wear a red nose and donate to Comic Relief Red Nose Day. Red noses will be available next week from the school office (we will send a Marvellous Me when they arrive) We will also have red ribbons and headbands available to purchase. Your child is eligible to start in the term following their 2nd or 3rd birthday. In some circumstances they may be able to start on their birthday so please enquire so we can help you with the options! You may be eligible for help with additional hours and fees. Please see the office for more infomation!
