What is EYFS?
This stands for Early Years Foundation Stage. It includes Nursery two year old room and three year old room and Reception classes.

What is KS1 and KS2?
Key Stage 1 (KS1) are years 1, and 2. Key Stage 2 (KS2) are years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

What is a ‘Star of the Week’?
Every week the class teacher chooses a pupil who they feel has: followed our SJB Beliefs, overcome barriers, listened to guidance, tried very hard or changed their attitude. They are awarded a certificate in assembly and their picture is put in the school newsletter and on the noticeboard. 

What are the school Beliefs?
Honesty, Determination, Celebration, Respect and Co-operation.  Each have three specific Bible verses associated with them.

What is the school’s mission statement?
We believe in providing a safe and happy learning environment where children and adults are valued, nurtured and empowered to achieve.

We believe a good education is the foundation on which our children’s futures are built and equips them for their life ahead. We aim to develop the whole child through a diverse and culture rich curriculum.

We are committed to providing an excellent education through helping children to achieve, by developing enquiring minds, instilling the motivation to learn and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Our approach is underpinned by our strong Christian ethos. We also aim to establish a clear understanding of rights and responsibilities for all by embedding the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child.

We believe everyone in the school community is responsible for instilling Christian values that will help our children become confident and responsible members of society.

How long before my child can return to school after an illness?
Vomiting and diarrhoea- 48 hours. Any other illnesses- follow GP suggestions.

Can my child walk to and from school alone?
 No. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you wish for an older sibling to collect them or drop them off, they must be over 16 years of age and must have identification.  Children in year 6 can walk home alone but only with written consent from the legal guardian.

Can my child cycle to school?
Yes, if they are accompanied by an adult (except Yr 6 pupils). We have a bicycle/scooter stand available. 

On my child’s birthday, can they bring in cakes/sweets for the class?
Sorry, no. We try to promote healthy living and eating. We do not permit sweets/chocolates/nut products or crisps in school.

What if my child cannot find their jumper?
Please ensure all items of clothing are fully labelled. We teach the children to look after their property. Ask Joy at the end of the school day or the class teacher/TA who will try to help find the item. 

Can I try to find my child’s lost coat by checking his classroom?
Parents/children are not permitted into the school building after school unless they have an appointment. Please tell the class teacher/TA and they will look for it at a convenient time.

Is a PE kit compulsory?
Yes. This is for health and safety and hygiene reasons. Our PE kit consists of: coloured house t-shirt, navy shorts or tracksuit bottoms, socks and trainers. No jewellery or watches. Long hair must be tied back. Your child needs their PE kit once a week. The same day every week.

What is the school policy on jewellery?
Earrings: small studs in ears are the only pieces of jewellery permitted. We do not take any responsibility for loss or damage.

Can my child bring a mobile phone in to school?
Children in year 6 may leave a phone at the front office.  It must be delivered there at the beginning of the school day and collected at the end.  It must be switched off during the school day. The school cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage.

What do I do if I need to see a teacher?
Teachers are available for brief enquiries after school. If you need a longer appointment, please contact the class teacher or the office who will make an appointment for you.

Can I go on my child’s class trip?
We have sufficient trained teachers and support staff who are first aid trained that accompany the children.

What is ‘Stay and Play’?
Stay and Play is an opportunity to stay with your child in Nursery or Reception classes on a weekly basis. These session begin when all children have settled. They run most weeks but there are some changes due to special events etc. See the school diary and newsletter for dates.

How do I find out what my child is learning?
Half termly curriculum overviews are sent home and available to view on the school web page.

How much is a school lunch?
All children across the school receive Free School Meals. There is no charge for any child to have lunch.

What should I put in my child’s packed lunch?
We recommend a healthy packed lunch. It may include: a savoury sandwich, a cereal bar, fruit, salad, vegetables, yoghurt and water. Nut products, chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks are not permitted.

At what age should I register my child for Nursery?
You should put your child on the waiting list at St John the Baptist when your child reaches the age of 2 and a half years old.

How do I apply for a place in Reception?
 If you are in our nursery, it does not guarantee a place in Reception. All applications are to be made directly to the Learning Trust. You can contact the Learning Trust on 0208 820 7000.
