Dear Families,
It’s been a very big week here at St John the Baptist as our Year 6 children have completed their KS2 SATs. As I said last week, these exams are just one moment in time—they do not define how brilliant, talented, and unique our children are, nor do they fully capture the tremendous progress they have made both inside and outside the classroom. We are so proud of how our students rose to the challenge.
Every single one of our Year 6 children impressed us with their mature, calm, and determined attitude. Some questions were particularly tricky, but they didn’t let that phase them. They tackled each paper with resilience, using their knowledge, strategies, and in some cases, sheer grit to work things out independently, which shows just as much about their growth mindset and readiness for what’s ahead.
This year, we were also visited by an external moderator from Hackney for two of the papers—something that happens to all schools periodically. He was hugely impressed, not only by our Year 6 pupils but by the entire school community. He commented on the calm and supportive atmosphere, thanks to the respect shown by pupils in other classes, and praised the way Year 6 approached the assessments with focus, organisation, and maturity. He even described our systems and practices as “impeccable”—a wonderful recognition of the dedication of our staff and the spirit of our pupils.
I want to give a special thank you to Donna, Collette, and the whole kitchen team for the fantastic breakfasts provided each morning. They certainly helped get the children’s brains ready for the day ahead.
We truly believe all our children have done brilliantly, and we look forward to receiving the results in July. Regardless of scores, they have already made us incredibly proud.
Warm regards,
Ms Toni Mason
We are thrilled to announce that our school will relaunching International Day and Evening on Wednesday 4th June from 3:45pm to 5:15pm, and we warmly invite all families to join us in the afternoon celebrating the incredible cultural diversity within our school community.
Throughout the day, children are encouraged to wear traditional clothing from their home country or from a country that holds special significance for their family. This is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to share and take pride in their heritage.
In preparation for the event, each class will be learning about a country from around the world. During the evening, students will have prepared a stand and will be able to showcase what they have learned through displays and presentations. It promises to be a vibrant and enriching experience for all.
And what’s a celebration without food? We’ll be serving a variety of delicious international dishes—and that’s where we would love your help. We are kindly asking families to consider contributing a dish that represents their culture or background. Whether it’s sweet or savoury, a small taster or a full tray, all donations are greatly appreciated.
If you are able to bring food to share, please let us know by contacting the school office by Friday 30th May. Be sure to label your dish and include a list of ingredients for allergy purposes.
Let’s come together to celebrate, learn from one another, and enjoy a truly global evening. We can’t wait to see you there!
Looking for something fun and affordable to do with the kids? This weekend, Half Moon Theatre is showing “Party”—a lively, interactive show perfect for ages 3–8, with tickets around £7.
Closer to home, Hackney Empire is running Family Saturdays, offering free or low-cost drama and storytelling workshops for children.
A great way to spark creativity and enjoy time together—why not give the theatre a go?
